How disruptive is a kitchen respray? Less than you probably think. Most jobs take around five days from start to finish, your kitchen stays structurally intact throughout, and you never need to empty a single cupboard. Life carries on. It is not a full renovation — and that is exactly the point.
That said, there are a few days where the kitchen is out of action. I want to be straight with you about that. If you go in with realistic expectations, most of our clients find the process far more manageable than they anticipated.
What Actually Happens During a Kitchen Respray
Day One: Preparation
Preparation is where the quality is won or lost. Our team arrives and begins the meticulous process of removing all cabinet doors, drawer fronts and hardware. These go off-site to our workshop, where they are sprayed in controlled conditions. That is how we achieve a factory-quality finish — not by spraying everything in place and hoping for the best.
The cabinet carcasses that remain in your kitchen are masked off carefully. Worktops, appliances, floors and walls are all protected. This takes time, and we do not rush it.
Days Two and Three: Spraying
The carcasses are sprayed in situ. The doors are being finished simultaneously in the workshop. We use professional water-based paints — Tikkurila coatings among them — that are low in VOCs, which matters when you are spraying inside a home. Odour is minimal compared to solvent-based systems. Even so, ventilation is good practice, and we manage that as part of our process.
During this phase, your kitchen is not usable for cooking. The hob, sink and worktops are masked. Plan for a few days of alternative eating arrangements — takeaways, a microwave in another room, meals at family or friends. It is a short-term inconvenience for a finish that lasts a decade.
Days Four and Five: Reassembly and Final Checks
Doors are returned, rehung and adjusted. Hardware goes back on. We do a thorough quality check before we consider the job complete. By the end of day five, in most cases, you have a fully functional kitchen again — with a finish that looks like it came straight out of a factory.
Do You Need to Empty Your Cupboards?
No. This is one of the most common questions I get asked, and the answer is straightforward. Because we remove the doors and spray the exterior surfaces only, the contents of your cupboards stay exactly where they are. No packing, no disruption to your crockery, no reorganising shelves.
Can You Still Use the Kitchen at All?
Partially, yes. The sink may be accessible in the evenings once the working day is done, depending on the stage of the job. The key spraying days are when access is genuinely limited. We try to be as organised and predictable as possible so you can plan around us.
Most families manage perfectly well. In over twenty years of doing this, I have never had a client tell me the disruption was not worth it.
How Does This Compare to a Full Kitchen Replacement?
A full kitchen replacement typically means weeks of tradespeople, structural work, plumbing, electrical, tiling — the entire room out of action, often with significant mess and noise throughout the house. A respray is a different category of work entirely. Five days. No structural changes. No skips outside. Your kitchen is transformed, not demolished.
The cost saving is real, but for most of our clients it is the disruption saving that makes the biggest difference to the decision.
What About Smell and Mess?
We use low-VOC water-based coatings throughout. Odour is far lower than old-fashioned solvent paints. We protect your home carefully — floors, worktops, walls — and we leave the space clean at the end of each day. Spray painting done properly is a controlled, precise process.
